Grease separators & backwater protection

In this article, you can find out what standard-compliant safety measures for kitchens and industrial facilities look like.

When does a grease separator need to be protected against backwater?

If the water level in a grease separator falls below the backwater level, sewer water will back up through the separator into the inlet pipe in the event of backwater. From there, it will escape from all outlets that are also located below the backwater level. At the same time, grease, oil and sewage with faecal matter are forced upwards inside the tank and, in the worst case, out through the seals of the separator system. For this reason, such grease separators must be drained via a downstream backflow prevention system in accordance with DIN EN 1825-2.

This is how grease separators are protected against backwater

Grease separators are protected against backwater using pump technology. Depending on the specific application, various types of systems may be suitable, each of which must be fitted with a mains-independent warning device to signal operational faults. For the drainage of a separator installed in the ground, the backwater prevention device is housed in a chamber.

This is how grease separators are protected by hybrid lifting stations

If there is a natural gradient, the grease separator can also be protected by a hybrid lifting station. The hybrid lifting station only pumps in the event of backwater, thereby saving energy and ensuring the highest possible operational safety. This offers you many advantages:

  • Wastewater disposal even in the event of backwater from the sewer
  • Wastewater flows via the natural gradient of the drainage pipe
  • Off-grid backflow monitoring via battery operation
  • Six-monthly maintenance, low maintenance requirements
  • No interruption to operations in the event of a power cut
  • No deposits, as there is no holding tank
