Key terms

Technical terminology explained simply

pumping height

Pumping height refers to the difference in energy of the fluid between the pump’s inlet and outlet. The pumping height required of the pump is the sum of the geodetic height difference and the pressure losses in the valves and pressure pipes. It is often expressed in metres (m).

flow rate

The flow rate is the volume of fluid delivered by the pump within a given period of time. It is commonly expressed in litres per second (l/s) or cubic metres per hour (m³/h).

pumping volume

The pumping volume is the volume pumped between the times the pump is switched on and off. It indicates the actual volume pumped per cycle.

Tank capacity

The tank volume corresponds to the total volume of the tank.
