ATEX certification for drainage products
Electrical drainage equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres requires ATEX certification. Examples of potentially explosive atmospheres include the public sewer network, into which unauthorised fuels are sometimes discharged, or pump sumps in pumping stations for sewage with faecal matter. To obtain ATEX approval, drainage products must comply with one of the following directives:
- 94/9/EC for products placed on the market before 20 April 2016
- 2014/34/EU for products placed on the market on or after 20 April 2016

KESSEL pump technology with ATEX certification
Various KESSEL pumps and wet-mounted pumping stations with ATEX certification are available for the disposal of sewage with faecal matter. The explosion protection prevents flammable gases such as hydrogen sulphide or methane from igniting upon contact with electrical components. Flammable gases can be produced in sewage tanks, for example, as a result of biological decomposition processes.

Explosion protection during maintenance
When carrying out maintenance work that requires the sewage tank to be opened, adequate ventilation must be ensured. It must also be ensured that there are no sources of ignition in the immediate vicinity. This also applies to dry-installed pumping stations and lifting stations whose pumps do not require ATEX certification.
