Where do floor drains need to be installed?
A drain must be provided beneath every water outlet in the building (except for fire-fighting purposes and for washing machines and dishwashers), unless the water can drain away to a drain via a watertight floor without forming puddles.
Sanitary facilities in buildings intended for use by a changing group of people or which are generally accessible (e.g. hotels, schools, sports facilities or restaurants) must be fitted with a floor drain with an odour trap. Bathrooms in residential properties should be fitted with a bathroom drain. In addition to floor drainage, these also protect against flooding and water ingress into the building structure caused by overflowing baths, washing machine faults, etc.
In addition to the DIN standards, workplace guidelines should also be observed, according to which a floor drain must be installed in washrooms for every 30 m² of floor area to be cleaned.
Floor drains where large amounts of sediment (e.g. from food processing or other commercial facilities) are generated must be fitted with sufficiently large waste bins or a downstream sediment separator. For drains in unpaved areas such as traffic areas, courtyards and gardens, the surrounding area within a radius of at least 1 m around the drain must be fixed.
