Waterproofing layer installation (white tank)

Types of waterproofing in detail

Standard-compliant waterproofing layer in buildings constructed from waterproof concrete

The term ‘white tank’ refers to a construction method in which the floor slab and external walls of a building form a sealed tank made of waterproof concrete (WU concrete), thereby eliminating the need for an additional, surface-level waterproofing layer on the external surfaces. This construction method is regulated by the standards DIN EN 206-1, DIN 1045-2 and the guideline “Waterproof concrete structures” (WU guideline) of the German Committee for Reinforced Concrete (DAfStb).

Waterproofing layer for waterproof concrete according to the specific application

Floor drains installed in parts of buildings made of waterproof concrete that are in contact with the ground must have a separate waterproofing layer applied to them in accordance with the specific application.

With thin-bed waterproofing

  • If the upper section on the screed and the drain body need to be covered with a waterproofing layer
  • For the procedure, see ‘Waterproofing layers for drains’

Using a waterproofing sheet

  • If the upper section needs to be waterproofed to the subfloor and the drain body
  • For the procedure, see ‘Waterproofing layers for drains with waterproofing sheet’
